Reflections on Life & Living

“Elegant as a clipper and practical as a tug, this brilliantly written elegy gently teaches the fundamental principles of life and how to navigate its shoals”
-M. Scoot Peck, M.D. -
Bode’s life-long love affair and expertise in the art of sailing provides him with an excellent metaphor on living life to the fullest. The book starts with the author’s childhood days, his passion for sailing, how he learned the art of sailing starting with a little boat. As the progression from his first voyage in a rowboat to the masterful tacking of his blue-decked sloop unfolds, we get to learn valuable life lessons the author carefully weaves at each step along the way. This is an inspiring and wonderful little book that teaches us to maneuver with patience and resolve around the obstacles we encounter in our own passage through life.
Bode’s language is simple and has a magical quality to it. You can enjoy the writing as well as learn many lessons of life and living. Consider the following passage: “I was the beneficiary of their collective genius. This boat, an amalgam of mechanics and music, was the highest gift within their power to pass down the ages to me. When I knew that, I also knew the truth about creation. Many lives, going back thousands of years, had gone into the making of my sloop, just as many lives, going back into time unknown, had gone into making of me.”
This small book is a wonderful teacher and teaches in the most beautiful and enjoyable way the truths and facts about life and living and how to set a goal, chart a course to reach your goal and how to navigate towards your goal through the ocean avoiding and steering clear of obstacles and with wind filling your sails. A terrific book.
